The Oregon incident will go down in history as the most horrifying test of faith to have ever been endured. The following events were shared by an 18 year old college student, deemed by the shooter as “the lucky one”. Out of random reasons, the shooter picked this young boy as his massager: the one who would give the envelope to the police.
He is Mathew Downing, the one who witnessed Christopher Harper-Mercer perform the most horrifying test of faith that he hopes nobody in the world will ever be forced to witness again. As Mercer entered the classroom, Downing could not believe that what was happening at the time could be real. Shots were already fired and people knew that the day would not end well.
Downing said that Mercer’s first move was to put his backpack on the desk and he pulled the envelope out. Then he started saying that the flash drive found in the pack should be given to the police, if there were any survivors left after “the procedure” ended. But then Mercer looked at Downing and called him “the lucky one” and he promised that he would not shoot him if he gave the envelope to the police.
When the 18 year old stood up, the shooter pointed the gun at him. Downing thought that he was done for, but the shooter took a brief pause, gave him the envelope and told him to go to the back of the class, where he should face the events to come. After Downing did what he was supposed to do, Mercer proceeded to fire in the middle of the chamber and started questioning victims about their religious beliefs.
He killed two girls: a Christian and a Catholic. The man was severely damaged because, according to Downing, “he was firing on people who were just lying there.” Mercer apparently got bored when a woman claimed that she could not stand anymore because of leg pain. Then he approached another woman, whom she told to stand up, but when she picked up a desk to try to defend herself, he shot her in the leg.
The police arrived as soon as they could and after Mercer was shot, he lay down and put a bullet through his head. Nine families lost a loved one that day and another nine people were severely wounded by the experience. But these are only the physical aspects. Everybody’s mind will remain scarred for life after that day.
