An active lifestyle is important in order to be healthy. A new research shows that African-Americans are more likely to have high blood pressure if they are not active. This study showed the effects of an active lifestyle.
This study focused on African-Americans because they have a higher chance of having high blood pressure. The researchers from Columbia University showed that an active lifestyle is the best way to reduce the risk of high blood pressure for African-Americans.
In order to conduct this study, researchers analyzed more than 1,300 African-American who participated in the Jackson Heart Study. Before the study none of the participants had hypertension. The physical activity the participants made was recorded since 2000 until 2004. After that, they were reexamined between 2005 and 2008 and another time since 2009 up until 2013.
More than half of the participants attended the study for more than eight years. The findings showed that those who were more active had a lower chance of developing hypertension. Those who were inactive developed high blood pressure in this study.
More than half of the people who participated in this study were diagnosed with hypertension at the end of the study. The researchers mentioned that the ideal amount of time for exercise per week is 150 minutes.
The researchers also said that any amount of physical activity is important. The study showed that even if people exercised less than 150 minutes they still had a lower chance of developing hypertension compared to those who were inactive.
The researchers mentioned that exercising is not enough for people to lead a healthy life. They said that people need to eat healthily and sleep well in order to have lower chances of developing heart problems. The study did show that exercise is the most important when it comes to heart problems.
The researchers mentioned that their study has limitation. They said that the participants were all from the same community. They also said that the physical activity might not have been accurately measured and that is why the findings of the study are limited.
