Since News Feed doesn’t excel in bringing you breaking news, Facebook rolls out Notify app for reading news while they’re hot. With the new feature, you can customize what you wish to be alerted to including trending news and infotainment.
You will be able to choose from 70 different publishers and set your alerts to notify you on what is really important to you such as specific sports teams or bands, companies, municipalities, politicians, and so on.
When there is something to read about a specific topic you are interested in, the notification will be featured in Notify feed for a whole day. You can click the notification to read the article.
On Wednesday, the new app was rolled out in the U.S. but only for iOS. Tech experts believe that the new app may replace Twitter for people who are interested in real-time info and are not that into real-time discussions and their peers’ opinions.
For the moment, the new Facebook app doesn’t have ads, but it could feature sponsored suggestions to specific content. If Notify becomes popular among Facebook’s 1.5 billion users, it could morph into a channel which provides information that is both trending and relevant and has a proper method of notifying readers/viewers of it.
This is why Notify could become a popular alternative to News Feed and Twitter. While Twitter offers alerts to a broad range of content which in many cases may not be of particular interest to you, Notify allows you to choose between relevant subtopics.
For instance, on a business channel you can choose to be notified only on a specific company, on a sports channel you can set your Notify app to keep you informed on a specific team or player, on a weather channel you can choose to be notified on weather conditions in a particular area by inserting the ZIP code, and on VEVO you can choose only one type of music videos you would like to be informed about.
“The key here is for people to create the mix that matters to them,”
said Julian Gutman, Facebook’s product manager for the new app.
Furthermore, Notify could provide a level of control that other apps cannot. Many times, people have complained that they get push notifications about topics that are not relevant to them. And receiving too many push notifications can often become annoying.
You will not have to open Notify to benefit from it. Alerts will be visible on your lock screen from where you can click through to be redirected to the related article.
