New technology is on a role with August announcing the Smart Lock will be sold starting this week at the Apple Store nationwide for the purchase price of $249.99 although it is not showing up in Apple search results as of yet. While the selling price for this Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) lock is set at $249.99, the preorder price of $199.99 for the original introductory price point will be honored.
According to August, the company’s retail partnership with Apple makes perfect sense by providing consumers an in-person experience while shopping at Apple stores. Also acknowledged in August’s statement is that some early customers are displeased that the product will launch at retail before preorders are shipped, a tough decision according to a company spokesperson.
As explained, the primary reason for going to retail is that many of the early supporters of the Smart Lock consistently requested alternatives to a solely-online buying experience. By purchasing the lock in stores, consumers have the opportunity to see the device first-hand, understand requirements for installation, and gain confidence in how it works but also the way it fits their lifestyles.
The August Smart Lock was designed by Yves Behar and made to replace an existing deadbolt. Typically, a homeowner can install the lock in about 10 minutes although a professional can be hired to assist if preferred. To accommodate this need, a network of approximately 300 locksmiths throughout the country received special training on installation of this device.
To function, the Smart Lock relies on Bluetooth LE, as well as August’s mobile application on iOS and Android. With the application, family members and friends will have temporary or permanent permission to unlock the door based on settings. The lock also makes it possible to upload verbal or photographic greetings.
The Smart Lock is designed to unlock with a single tap when nearing the door although for Android users, nothing has to be done. Even if the mobile device is in a person’s pocket, the Auto-Unlock feature senses the individual’s presence close to the door. Although this feature is not yet available on iOS, it will be shortly after today’s launch.
Because the Smart Lock replaces the door’s interior deadbolt, outside appearances do not change. As a result, the outside deadbolt can still be opened with a key.
