Germanwings Co-pilot Hid Illness That Would Have Banned Him From Flying

Germanwings

The co-pilot who deliberately crashed a plane belonging to Germanwings into the French Alps, killing all 150 aboard, was receiving medical treatment, but he hid this information from the airline.

Co-pilot Andreas Lubitz seems to have hid his illness from his employers. According to the prosecutors, authorities found a doctor’s note in the co-pilot’s house, which excused him from work for the day he plummeted a passenger plane into a mountain.

The new evidence was discovered after the search of Lubitz’s home. It could provide an explanation for the crashing of the Airbus A320 into the French Alps, which killed all 150 people on board.

Ralf Herrenbrueck, the prosecutor’s spokesperson, didn’t reveal details about Lubitz’s illness, but such notes as the one found in his home are used to excuse employers from work in Germany.

Herrenbrueck added that other medical documents were found, which indicated that the co-pilot was undergoing and “appropriate medical treatment.” No suicide note was found in his house, nor other indications of any political or religious motivation for the co-pilot’s actions.

The German newspaper Bild published, of Friday, what it claimed were extracts of Lubitz’s medical records. Bild claimed that the co-pilot had been labeled as “not suitable for flying” by the Lufthansa’s training school in Arizona.

The paper added that Lubitz spent 18 months receiving psychiatric treatment. He was diagnosed with a “severe depressive episode.” The report said that investigators were trying to discover whether Lubitz was suffering from a “personal life crisis”, which included some domestic troubles with his girlfriend.

The Bild report could answer some questions about the mysterious period in Lubitz’s training to become a pilot, when he took some time of from his lessons. Lufthansa chief executive Carsten Spohr said that “Lubitz’s flying abilities were flawless” and that he passed all tests and checks with flying colors.

German magazine Der Spiegel quoted friends of the co-pilot whom said the pilot had taken a break from training because of depression. After finishing his training, Lubitz worked as a flight attendant for 11 months before becoming a co-pilot with Lufthansa’s budget subsidiary Germanwings. He became a co-pilot in September 2013.

French prosecutors announced yesterday that Lubitz had deliberately crashed the airplane into the mountains. According to the conclusions which were brought forward by the French authorities, the co-pilot has locked out the cockpit and switched the aircraft’s autopilot to its lowest descent course. He also ignored all appeals from air traffic controllers.

Pilot Patrick Soderheimer desperately tried to enter the cabin, as Bild reported that he used an axe in his failed attempt to break the thick door.

Olympic Champion Dies in Helicopter Crash while Filming a Reality TV Show

Camille Muffat had won the gold medal for France at the 2012 Olympics, when the swimmer set an Olympic record in the 400 m freestyle.

She was only 22 years old at the London Olympics. On Monday, her triumph was showed again and again by French media, after news emerged that Camille Muffat and seven other athletes died in a helicopter crash.

They were filming a reality TV show in Argentina. Champion sailor Florence Arthaud and Olympic boxer Alexis Vastine were also among the victims. The French athletes perished while filming an episode for the survivalist program “Dropped”.

The show involves contestants being left on their own in the wilderness and using their survival instincts and skill to find their way back to civilization.

Muffat only joined the reality show two weeks ago. She had retired from swimming last year, after a dispute with her coach, and since then she had participated in various events.

The accident happened while the helicopter was flying near Villa Castelli, more than 700 miles northwest of the Argentinian capital of Buenos Aires.

According to Cesar Angulo, the Secretary of Security of the region where the helicopter crashed, it is believed that they collided and after that a big explosion followed. The Argentine pilots also died in the accident, which happened near the place where the versions of the show for Switzerland and Denmark were also filmed. The causes of the crash are still unknown.

Florence Arthaud, 57, who was nicknamed “Fiancee of the Atlantic”, was the first famous women in the world of sailing. In 1990 she broke the record for the fastest solitary crossing of the North Atlantic ocean.

Another victim of Monday’s crash, Alexis Vastine, 28, won a bronze medal at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing at the 60-64 kilogram category. His loss in the semifinal with Manuel Felix Diaz was surrounded by controversy.

French Sports Minister Thierry Braillard said that “the whole French sport is in mourning” after the loss of “three huge champions”.

It is the second tragedy in two years for a show aired by French station TF1. In April 2013 the medic who was responsible for the contestants’ health in the running show Koh-Lanta committed suicide after one of the athletes died. The competitor had complained of heart pains during one of the tests of the show.

U2’s Bono: Guitar Playing May Be Permanently Over

By 1 Comment

BonoAlthough he was born as Paul David Hewson, the world knows him simply as Bono, singer, songwriter, and musician for the famous band U2. Among the many great guitarists in history, Bono ranks as one of the top. Not only is he an outstanding guitarist and songwriter responsible for writing the majority of the band’s music, he is an activist for issues in Africa, a venture capitalist, and businessman.

Regardless of where U2 tours, concerts are quickly sold out but now, there is a real possibility that Bono may not be able to play guitar, not just with the band, but forever.

This past November, Bono was in a very serious biking accident in New York’s Central Park. He suffered an array of injuries with the most prominent being a compound fracture of the elbow. To repair the six broken bones, surgeons worked for hours and used three metal plates and multiple screws.

When asked about his recovery and prognosis to join U2 on tour, Bono stated that the recovery period has been much harder than imagined. He added that he is not sure he will ever be able to play the guitar again. Not only is this news devastating to Bono but also millions of loyal fans throughout the world.

Earlier in September, U2’s thirteenth studio album entitled “Songs of Innocence” was released. This album was part of a special deal with Apple whereby songs on the album became available as a free download to all users of iTunes.

The 2015 tour called the “Innocence + Experience Tour” was announced last month and is scheduled to start in Vancouver Canada on May 14. The tour will continue until closing in Paris on November 11. This tour will be extremely demanding since a minimum of two shows will take place in each city along the way.

With 54-year-old Bono injured, several non-tour performances were cancelled. One of these appearances was on the Tonight Show, scheduled to last an entire week. There was also a cancellation of the “Almost Acoustic Christmas” that was to appear at KROQ-FM.

Following U2’s blog, Bono’s elbow injury, along with breaking his shoulder, hand, and bones in his face, has put him in a dire position regarding his future as a professional musician. During Bono’s writing, he admitted that not playing the guitar ever again was a very real possibility. Bono added that members of U2 reminded him that the band itself and Western civilization is not depending on him playing.

Although doctors believe Bono will make a complete recovery, the “freak accident” as Bono calls it, may have forever altered his professional life. Interestingly, earlier last year Bono told a host of a British talk show that he wore his sunglasses on stage because for more than 20 years, he has suffered from glaucoma. That coupled with the latest injuries, things do not look terribly optimistic.

For the time being, the band will follow through on their tour commitment while people around the globe send best wishes and prayers that Bono will not only recover and play the guitar again but come back even better and stronger than before.
