A star system with an intricate web of black holes was discovered through a new computer modeling process by a group of University of Surrey experts. This allowed them to look at hundreds of such holes grouped in a cluster, inside a star system.
Miklos Peuten, a doctoral student and lead author of the study noted that to find come up with the results, his team of scientists first found their gravitational effect on the surrounding areas, and then it detected the cluster of black holes. By employing computer-generated simulation procedures, they found new clues about these huge vacuum holes. This way, astronomers determined the locations for many such formations. The new technique allowed them to “see the un-seeable.”
The findings were published in the Monthly Notices of The Royal Astronomical Society.
The newly-discovered cluster is called NGC 6101. At first, astronomers thought it was peculiar that the star system was less populated towards the center area. The team then put the data they had on the history of NGC 6101, based on observation and on mapping the individual stars.
Then a computer program did the rest and revealed the system also contained these groups of holes. It found hundreds of black holes, and were so powerful, they were merging.
The study aims to answer essential questions about the evolution of stars and black holes. Recently, scientists discovered gravitational waves which confirmed Einstein’s theories on the forces of gravity.
Scientists previously though that a cluster of black holes was a Sci-Fi idea. Now, that idea has been proven to have a correspondent in space.
Black holes are stars which implode and form huge gravitational vacuums that absorb everything around them, including light.
They are invisible from a telescope’s perspective because they allow no light to escape. The tricky part is to calculate the gravitational effect on the area surrounding them.
With the new experiment, one more calculation method was added to the ever expanding catalog of black holes.
This is one of the first formations of this type discovered. The group of black holes is called a globular cluster and it is a very rare occurrence.
