For those choosing to have sex in their later years, it could be more of a challenge than it was previously thought. According to a major recent study on sex lives of older adults, sex has different consequences for men than it has for women.
Women of age who have sex seem to benefit from a lowered risk of hypertension and good health. Women enjoy the quality time they spend with their partner. They also benefit from the female sexual hormone which is released during an orgasm.
On the other hand, men who have sex at older ages are at risk for developing cardiovascular disease and many suffer heart attacks as a result of the intense sexual activity.
The study was published on the sixth of September in the Journal of Health and Social Behavior. The body of research was funded by the federal government and led by Prof. Hui Liu. Liu teaches sociology at the Michigan State University.
She noted that the findings go against popular belief that sex has the same benefits for everyone. Liu and her team have looked at surveys from 2,204 people in the National Social Life, Health and Aging Project.
What they found was that older men who engage in sexual activity once a week have a higher risk of cardiovascular events five years later than those who remain sexually inactive after a certain age.
Older women do not have these risks.
Researchers were surprised to find that having sex once a week puts older men’s cardiovascular system at risk. The risk is two times higher for them to suffer a heart attack than it is for men who don’t have sex after a certain age.
This happens because older men put more pressure on themselves, both emotionally and physically to achieve climax. With age, old men become frailer and suffer sexual dysfunctions.
Another essential finding revealed that those who take testosterone supplements or medication for sexual function are exposed to cardiovascular issues as well.
Liu concluded that it’s a good idea for physicians to discuss older men’s sex lives and make them aware of the risks involved. Also, doctors are advised to screen their elderly patients who have sex, for cardiovascular problems.
