A team of scientists has announced the creation of a new technology that could be used to predict stomach cancer. The new technology is in the form of a breath test that can be used to monitor people who may be at a high risk of developing cancer of the stomach.
According to the scientists involved in the new project, stomach tumors could be detected using a simple breath test, which could save many lives.
The researchers have conducted a series of tests in order to measure and evaluate the level of compounds collected from patients’ breath. This can show whether they are at risk of stomach cancer.
The method proved to be both accurate and cost-effective, the scientists said.
Stomach cancer affects approximately 74,000 people in the US every year. Although the disease is not very common, the curing rate of the patients is mostly very poor, mainly because stomach cancer is seldom diagnosed in its early stage.
Some of the early symptoms of stomach cancer include indigestion and burping, which are similar to other stomach conditions that are less dangerous. This why the cancer is not taken into consideration until it’s too late.
At the moment, the only test used to detect stomach cancer is endoscopy, which is a procedure that involves a tube being inserted into the patient’s stomach, down the throat to see if there are any tumors inside.
The new procedure of detecting stomach cancer uses a technology called “nanoarray analysis”, which can also determine which patients are at a greater risk of developing the disease, according to the researchers from Latvia and Israel who were involved in the project.
Their report says that the new breath test proved to be 92% accurate in discovering which of the patients had stomach cancer.
The researchers explained that patients whose stomach cells had been affected by changes that lead to cancer can be detected with the same level of accuracy.
The team of scientists from the Israel Institute of Technology and the University of Latvia said that the new technology has great potential as a test for cancer screening, and also for monitoring those who are believed to be at a high risk of developing the disease.
The research involved analyzing the samples collected from 484 people. 99 of them had previously been diagnosed with stomach cancer.
According to the researchers, this study is one of the largest that confirms the accuracy of breath test diagnosis.
