U.S. Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer appealed to the Food and Drug Administration over the weekend to start investigations regarding a new viral trend, snortable cocoa powder. The producer of such a product is Legal Lean in Orlando. The company took the media by storm by presenting a hybrid between delicious chocolate and snorting practices.
Legal Lean Markets Its Snortable Cocoa Powder as a Shot of Energy, Euphoria, and Motivation
The controversial product that goes under the brand of Coco Loko is a mixture of cocoa powder and other ingredients. These additional elements are often found in energy drinks, such as guarana, taurine, and Ginkgo Biloba. The marketing material that promotes this merchandise claims that it is a source of motivation and offers a shot of energy. Legal Lean stated that their product is safe and can introduce users in a state of euphoria.
On the other hand, medical experts doubt the safety of the snortable cocoa powder. First of all, any element that is snorted can inflict damages to the nasal passage. Secondly, the ingredients that make up this new type of mixture are suspicious.
Charles Schumer shares these concerns especially since he was always against stimulants based on caffeine. The Senator described the new product as “cocaine on training wheels.” Therefore, he fears that the powder can put the health of consumers in jeopardy and intends to make it illegal on the market.
The Product Didn’t Need FDA’s Approval to Enter the Market
The FDA didn’t investigate the novelty before it went public. That’s because the company labeled the snortable chocolate as a dietary supplement over which the agency has no authority to investigate before hitting the shelves. On the other hand, Schumer doubts that Coco Loko shares any nutritional value that could persuade parents to offer it to their children. In its turn, the company made slight suggestions that it could ease up on cases of anxiety.
The founder of Legal Lean, Nick Anderson, described the product as safe and effective. It is actually a version of similar products that invaded European markets which grant a happy state of around 30 minutes.
