Thousands of people suffer every year from kidney problems, such as kidney stones. This condition is very painful and needs surgery if it is too developed. Roller Coasters can be an effective medicine for kidney stones. Despite the fact that it sounds crazy, a new study shows that in some cases a ride on a roller coaster is as effective as any medicine.
The lead researcher was David Wartinger, a professor at Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine. He started this study after he heard several patients saying that they passed kidney stones on a roller coaster ride. This intrigued him, and he started digging.
The normal treatment for passing kidney stones is drinking water and staying very active so that the stone passes on its own. Well, a roller coaster ride does the trick too.
After printing a 3-D kidney model, the researchers filled it with kidney stones and urine. They then went to Disney World to test this theory. They discovered that it is true because the vibrations and movement of the ride can jog the stones. To make it more real, the researchers put the model of a kidney in a natural position in a backpack.
There are also different results based on the place that the patient gets in the roller coaster. For instance, if the person sits in front of the coaster the effect is not that big as if he sits on the back of it. The study showed that 64% of people could get rid of kidney stones if they stay in the back and only 17% of them get rid of kidney stones if they sit in the front. This is because the vibration and movement are bigger in the second half of the coaster.
The researchers mentioned that it is not necessary to go in high excitements railroads for the stone to pass. Despite this, the railroad should be moderate, because a low-excitement doesn’t have the same results. After testing different types of railroads, the researchers think that a moderate one is the best for this type of condition.
The doctor that lead the study also mentioned that to have real and documented results they need to conduct this type of study on real people too.
