Since his death on August 11, family members, friends, and even fans have waited for the official autopsy report on Robin Williams to be released. According to the Marin County coroner, the cause of death has been ruled suicide by asphyxiation.
The coroner’s report also put speculations to rest by confirming that at the time of his death, Williams had no drugs or alcohol in his system. The only things reported in the toxicology report were prescription medications in therapeutic doses, meaning he was not abusing prescribed drugs.
Last August, William’s was found by a personal assistant after entering his bedroom only to find him hanging by a belt in the closet door. Lying next to his body was a pocketknife and on his wrists, superficial cuts.
Although police and paramedics arrived on scene within minutes, it was too late for the beloved 63-year-old actor. News of William’s death sent shockwaves through the world, given that he had touched millions of lives with his kindness, generosity, and unrivaled humor.
For several years, Williams battled alcoholism and drug addiction but for a good portion of his life, he struggled with anxiety and deep depression. However, family members stress that at the time of his suicide, Williams was completely sober, something confirmed by the autopsy report.
Williams was open and honest about his substance abuse struggles. Although he was sober, he took the problem very seriously. Shortly before his passing, Williams was scheduled to enter a special program but according to this wife, it was not because he was abusing alcohol or drugs but to reaffirm his rehabilitation principles.
After his passing, information revealed by his wife and close friends made it a little easier to understand Williams’ state-of-mind. In addition to depression, he was having trouble sleeping and increased signs of paranoia.
It was also learned recently that Williams had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2013 although he began experiecing symptoms in 2011. He was given drug treatment for the disease in 2014, which offered some degree of improvement.
Reportedly, the autopsy also showed that he was in the very early stages of dementia, something he would not have been aware of when he took his life. Sadly, many comedians hide behind their humor while trying to suppress darkness, which seems to be what Williams was doing.
