Social media guru Mark Zuckerberg has revealed some of his secrets of success at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
The founder of Facebook, one of the most successful companies in the world, spoke in front of a captivated audience in the Spanish city about the things he looks for in an eventual employee.
Zuckerberg said that he would only hire someone to work directly for him, but only if he would also work for that person. The 30-year-old Facebook CEO added this rule served him well in the past.
Mark Zukerberg has a net worth of approximately $35 billion, but added at the conference in Barcelona that “Facebook is not a company for everyone in the world”.
One of the tests a potential Facebook employee must past is an interview with Sheryl Sandberg, the chief operating officer of the company, who was assigned personally to the job, saying she is a mentor for him and a person who helped build Facebook into a “healthy organisation”.
The social media giant is a relatively small company compared to other big players from Silicon Valley. If Facebook has fewer than 10.000 employees, Google has 55.000 people on it’s payrolls.
Zuckerberg considers this fact as an important part of Facebook’s success. “The most important thing is to keep the team as small as possible. We serve more than a billion people with a team of fewer than 10,000 people,” said Zuckerberg.
Mark Zuckerberg went on to say that a candidate for a position in the company he founded must have inner faith and trust.
“Don’t discount yourself, no matter what you’re doing. Everyone has a unique perspective that they can bring to the world,” he explained, adding that experience is not always important in getting things done. “I started Facebook when I was 19”, he said.
The Facebook CEO thinks that big companies “get bloated” when they increase their team too much.
According to Zuckerberg, Facebook’s main goal to connect people on a global level, by sharing their own photos, videos and messages, “is pretty broad”.
While Apple is rumored to be developing an electric car and Google is working on a driver-less car and also on solar power and a cancer detecting pill, Facebook’s next big thing seems to be the development of virtual-reality technology.
