Jewel-Like Stars from Custer 'Trumpler 14' Shown in Hubble Photo

The Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has captured a new, mesmerising photo of Trumpler 14 – an open cluster that harbours approximately two thousand young stars, located about 8,000 light-years from Earth.

Trumpler 14 is situated in the inner regions of the Carina Nebula, it has a diameter of six light-years, and an estimate mass of 4,300 M☉ (solar mass), scientists say. The new Hubble image shows a spectacular glittering star clusters.

European Space Agency (ESA) officials stated that Trumpler 14 has one of the highest concentrations of massive, young, bright stars in the entire Milky Way. According to the European Space Agency, the star cluster is only about five hundred thousand years old.

Many of the stars found in Trumpler 14 are quickly consuming their great amounts of hydrogen. A lot of them will live fast and die young, ESA officials stated. Before they meet their end and explode as supernovas, they usually have about a few million years to live, the European Space Agency stated. (note: a supernova is an astronomical event that takes place in the last stage of a massive star’s life, marked by one final titanic explosion)

To put things into perspective, our own Sun is still going strong at the age of about 4.6 billion years, according to scientists.

HD 93129Aa – a hot O class star in the Carina Nebula – is the name of the most luminous star that can be seen in the new Hubble image (and one of the brightest stars in the Milky Way). The European Space Agency said that HD 93129Aa is 2.5 million time brighter, and approximately eighty times more massive than the Sun.

Its surface temperature is higher than 90,000 degrees Fahrenheit (50,000 degrees Celsius) – which makes it one of the hottest stars in the Milky Way galaxy. Our sun’s surface temperature is only about 10,000 degrees Fahrenheit, or 5,500 degrees Celsius.

According to European Space Agency officials, HD 93129Aa is part of a binary system that consists of two stars – in this case HD 93129Aa and HD 93129Ab – orbiting around their common barycenter.

The Hubble Space Telescope was built by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), with contributions from the European Space Agency; HST is operated by the Space Telescope Science Institute (STSCI). Hubble was launched into low Earth orbit in 1990 and it has remained in operation ever since, capturing spectacular images and reshaping scientists’ understanding of the Universe.
