Ikea is looking to expand its parental leave program as the company announced that it will now be offering an additional 4 months of paid leave.
Ikea, a Swedish company, has come to be considered the largest global furniture retailer. The company is specialized in the design and sale of ready-to-assemble furniture, home accessories, and appliances.
Now, the United States division of the popular company has announced that it will be expanding its employees’ benefits.
In a move that will target all of its United States employees, the company declared that it will expand the parental leave.
With an approximated nation-wide number of about 14,000 workers, Ikea stated that through this move, it hopes to keep its employees. Besides ensuring its current workers, the company is also looking to attract new talents or to retain the already employed ones.
The new, expanded parental leave options will be coming into effect starting with January 1, 2017. The program will include a larger category of employees than it may have been expected.
Besides the already anticipated salaried employees, the new system will also address hourly or part-time workers. Also, it will advantage more than just moms-to-be.
The newly extended parental leave will also include fathers wishing to take time off so as to take care of their newborns. It will also include foster and adoptive parents, who wish to spend time with the children.
The new program will expand the current paid leave period with up to four months. All the aforementioned categories should be eligible to benefit from the new system.
Depending on the time they have spent with the company, the newly expanded leave will offer various additional benefits.
As such, the ones to have been working with the company for a three or more years period of time should be able to claim the four months of paid leave.
During the first 8 weeks of their paid leave, such employees will receive all their base wage. In the remaining 8 weeks, the employees will be receiving 50 percent of their base wage.
Employees to have worked less than the aforementioned time period will be eligible for an additional three months of paid parental leave.
As such, they should receive all the base wage during the first 6 weeks of the leave. The ensuing 6 weeks time, they will be receiving 50 percent of the said wage value.
The expanded parental leave program will be added in addition to the Short Term Disability system, which is currently available to co-workers.
Mona Astra Liss, an Ikea spokesperson, stated that the program will be rolled out in all 42 of the United States-based company stores.
Lars Petersson, the Ikea U.S. operations director stated that the company considers the new program an advantage.
According to Petersson, the extended parental leave is seen as an investment in the Ike co-workers. The co-workers which are considered the company’s most important resource, as stated by Petersson.
With the new parental leave, Ikea will be joining in amongst the companies to offer such extended benefits.
Only last year, Netflix, the video-streaming companies, announced an unexpected such program. Netflix now offers its salaried employees unlimited paid parental leave.
Since their announcement, other big companies have changed their leave systems. As such, companies the likes of Adobe Systems, Chobani, or the Hilton Hotels hotel chain have increased their parental paid days number.
