A division of Google is going to provide ISIS sympathizers with an alternative look at global issues. The Google Alphabet technology is supposed to curb the spread of terrorism linked to ISIS.
Yasmin Green, head of research and development at Jigsaw says ISIS is a terror organization with unprecedented influence. Jigsaw is an international technology incubator dealing with international security issues.
Green further says that the terror group has so far captured both physical and digital territories.
The extremist organization lost ground in Syria and Iraq recently, but security officials warn that ISIS’ access to sophisticated technology allows them to expand their base of supporters worldwide.
James Comey, director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation warned Congress last year that terrorists have access to vulnerable US citizens and they use their information to actively recruit them. He went on to say that foreign terror groups now have access to the United States “like never before.”
The Jigsaw team came to an interesting conclusion: ISIS recruits future terrorists by presenting them with manipulative information – according to former ISIS recruits.
There are hopes that if social networking giants like Facebook and Twitter give potential terrorists access to a wide range of information, they will be less tempted to join the extremist organization.
Members of the Jigsaw team came up with a personalized campaign to target individuals who have been proven to actively look to join terror organizations. The idea was based on a set of keywords ISIS sympathizers generally use. These keywords indicate a radicalization potential rather than simply being interested in coverage of terrorism in the Middle East.
Although the program is not a complete solution to more radical militants, it could turn out useful in stopping moderate believers in Islam to radicalize.
Some videos which are supposed to even out the balance between ISIS propaganda and a more coherent point of view are: Arabic and English footage of moderate Muslim clerics who demonstrate how hypocritical ISIS is, long queues for food in the ISIS fortress of Raqqa and a video of an old woman who stands up against ISIS and their ideology.
