Coconut crabs have the strongest pinch compared to any other crustacean. The force they pinch with is stronger than bite strenght of some larger predators. The crabs are one of the largest crustaceans in the world. Their usual weight is 4 kilograms and they are more than 3 feet long.
These coconut crabs can be found across the Indian and the Pacific Ocean. Their claws are used in order to defend themselves. They also use their claws to crack their food, including hard-shelled coconuts, their name deriving from this special ability.
Coconut crabs can lift almost 30 kilograms with their large claws. Until this study, the force of their claws was never tested. In order to conduct this study, researchers captured almost 30 crabs and used sensors to see just how much strenght they have. They found that the force of these crabs is correlated to their weight.
Researchers observed that the heavier the crab, the stronger it was. The crabs that were used for this study had different weights. The smallest weighed 30 grams and the biggest weighed more than 2 kilograms. The researchers observed that the biggest crab was also the strongest.
After establishing their force, they measured that a crab which weights 4 kilograms can crush 3,300 Newtons. This force is bigger than the bite force of wild bears and leopards. In order to make a comparison, a human has a bite force of maximum 340 newtons.
The lead researcher of the paper, Shin-ichiro Oka from Japan’s Okinawa Churashima Foundation declared that the sheer force of the coconut crab is scientifically remarkable. He also mentioned that the field work proved tricky as many scientists got pinched by the crustaceans.
There are a few animals that are stronger than coconut crabs. Alligators, for instance, have a stronger bite force compared to these crustaceans. Coconut crabs are interesting creatures because they use this force not only to feed themselves but to defend themselves from other animals. They also use this force in order to inhibit competitors.
This study managed to find exactly just how strong these crustaceans are. Before this study, researchers knew that coconut crabs were strong but they never measured their real force. Now they know that this is the strongest crustacean and that it can be stronger than some predators like leopards and bears.
