The family of actor, Bill Paxton, has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against a Los Angeles hospital and the surgeon who treated him. Paxton died from heart surgery complications, something which the actor’s family believe could have been prevented. Aside from alleging wrongful death, the family also accuses the surgeon and hospital of negligence and battery.
According to the suit filed Friday against Cedars- Sinai Medical Center, the surgeon was accused of using a “high risk and unconventional approach” that was not called upon during surgery. More so, the family alleges that the surgeon, Dr. Ali Khoynezhad, lacked the experience to perform and that he didn’t account for all the risks involved in the procedure.
The suit also alleges that the hospital knew about the surgeon’s habit of employing unnecessary risky methods while operating as well as downplaying the procedure’s risks.
Dr. Khoynezhad’s treatment caused Paxton to suffer extensive bleeding, cardiogenic shock, and a compromised coronary artery, according to the suit.
“Bill Paxton and his family trusted the physicians and staff at this medical facility but instead Cedars- Sinai betrayed their trust,” states Bruce Broillet, the family’s attorney. “The surgeon’s actions resulted in this tragic and preventable death.”
The Apollo 13 actor reportedly had a heart condition known as “aortic aneurysm” and underwent surgery to try to fix it. Paxton died 11 days later from a stroke.
Cedar- Sinai said that it could not publicly comment about Paxton’s case. Khoynezhad, who had left the Cedar-Sinai for another hospital, was not available for comment.
The lawsuit, pushed by the actor’s widow, Louise, and children, James and Lydia, comes just before the one year anniversary of the death of Bill Paxton. He was famous for playing major supporting roles in films like Aliens, Titanic, and Apollo 13.
