It seems the series of suicide attacks continues as a young suicide bomber blew herself up in Nigeria. A bomb was detonated at a market in Potiskum, a northeast Nigerian town, killing four people and seriously injuring 46 more. The bomb was attached to a young girl, not even 10 years old.
One of the bomb survivors Anazumi Saleh who suffered from several head injuries described that on Potiskum’s market day, a small girl, who seemed to be younger than 10 years old, stepped out of a tricycle taxi right in front of the cell phone market and set off the explosives.
Up until now, the bomber’s identity or her age could not be identified from her remains. There is also no clue to the real perpetrator although the attack bears similarity to other recent bombings by Boko Haram. This raises more concerns regarding “Nigeria’s home-grown Islamic extremists” that are kidnapping women and young girls in order to use them as suicide bombers.
Officials haven’t given any new information in regards to whether the girls and women involved in these recent attacks have detonated the bombs by themselves or if there was a person setting it off from a safe distance.
Among recent events, a new origination that increases Boko Haram’s publicity denied one of the statements made by the Ministry of Defense according to which troops retook control over the border garrison town of Baga.
At the same time, military forces from Nigeria and Chad are liberating towns and villages that were under Boko Haram’s authority for months. The northeastern communities are, however, under extremist siege.
Government hopes the military will be able to retake the control of enough territories by March 28 when presidential elections are planned but Boko Haram warned that this purpose won’t be fulfilled. He defined democracy as a “corrupt Western concept” and plans on disrupting future elections by attacking polling stations.
It is expected these elections will be remembers as the most closely contested in Nigeria’s history. Nigeria is Africa’s largest country in terms of population and the biggest oil producer.
There are many concerns regarding this figure as he is on the verge of allying with the Islamic State group that now controls territories in Iraq, Syria and Libya.
